End of the Summer

Well this year it has seem to hit like I am sure it used to many years ago. The entire island just seems to have come to a halt. Many of the past years have seen a gradual decline in the island's population as Labor Day passed. This year seems to be an exception. It seemed as if the day before Labor Day the bridge was closed. Though the bridge was not closed it seemed to signal an end of the summer. Perhaps it is a statement of the slowing economy. Whatever the cause it was amazingly noticeable how we who live here become used to the presence of the tourists. It took until this past Sunday riding a bike slowly as night fell past a row of vacation rental homes to realize the summer has gone. No more towels and bathing suits hung over countless decks. No more groups of people playing wiffelball or cornhole outside. No more driving past a home on the beach road with every light on, making the house seem to glow. No, this was a slow ride past block after block of vacation home that was empty. Maybe it was the slight breeze off the ocean or maybe it was just the lack of people but the island seemed darker than normal. Hopefully this darkness was just for that cold Sunday night. Maybe it was the possibility of a hurricane hitting the Outer Banks that made it so deserted. Whatever it was, lets hope some people make it back to the island. Fall is the most spectacular time to visit.
